Que les païens et autres profanateurs de tombeaux frémissent : Vox Low émerge à nouveau tel un messager des profondeurs, prêt à faire trembler les fondations, et portant sur ses épaules le poids des anciennes légendes des mystères obscurs. VRRRRRRR ! Dans leur très attendu deuxième album, Keep On Falling, les Parisiens osent revêtir le saint suaire ultime de la mythologie rock’n’roll : la combinaison de ski de cuir noir de Vince Taylor. Tel Moïse brandissant les bras, tel l’appel des anges déchus, ils convoquent sur cet album les esprits de Jeffrey Lee Pierce du Gun Club, les greasers hors-la-loi et enfiévrés des années cinquante, ainsi que les héros de l’aciiid rock. Wham! Bam ! Thank You Ma'am !
Le gang est composé de Jean-Christophe Couderc (machines + chant), Benoît Raymond (basse), Mathieu Autin (batterie) et un nouveau venu : Jérome Pichon (guitare) - qui semble, bizarrement, se servir d’une lame de cutter à la place d’un médiator. CLING! A ces prédicateurs de l’anarchie, il faut ajouter un certain Aurélien Bonneau, dont le rôle en tant qu’ingénieur du son – véritable sorcier – est devenu essentiel, au point d’être un membre du groupe à part entière. Ce qui semble lier ces renégats est le fanatisme de dévots envers Mark E. Smith et la passion du désordre. Vox Low sort donc leur très attendu deuxième album, Keep On Falling, faisant suite à un premier disque impeccable en 2018. Mais qu’est-il pendant ces cinq années ?
Le groupe n’a pas cessé d’être en colère, de composer, mais a surtout fait ce dans quoi il excelle désormais : des prestations live au goût de napalm. Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa ! SPLAF ! Ensemble, le quatuor parisien a visité la France, la Suisse, l’Allemagne, l’Espagne et même le Mexique. Le groupe est aussi constamment étonné de jouer devant un public de plus en plus jeune : la jeunesse aux cheveux bleus prenant la relève des quadras de la cold wave vêtus de pulls de camionneurs et de Dr. Martens défoncés.
Keep On Falling a été enregistré dans leur batcave secrète, située près de l’entrée du périphérique de la Porte d’Aubervilliers, à la frontière sombre du 18e arrondissement parisien, évoquant l’univers apocalyptique du film Rue Barbare (1984).
On peut remarquer un léger changement de direction par rapport à leur premier disque, avec peut-être moins d’influences club. Dans une danse macabre entre ombre et lumière, chaque titre de l’album révèle une profondeur inattendue, invitant l’auditeur à plonger dans une transe envoûtante.
Cette œuvre-ci est plus mature et plus fluide que leur premier opus et Vox Low y fusionne les genres pour créer un mélange envoûtant de krautrock planant, de post-punk funèbre, de dub enfumé et de rock’n’roll minimaliste. Si le ton semble se durcir, ces scélérats apparaissent aussi sous un jour plus pop et, étrangement, plus lumineux. De l’intro magistrale de « Distance » en passant par le très Curiste « Keep On Falling », Vox Low a décidé d’offrir toute la palette de leurs talents. Et ce qui brille, dans leurs regards, ce sont leurs yeux noirs. Car, les volutes de fumée et l’image de corbeaux gothiques, se cachent donc des chansons lumineuses et magnifiquement composées. On y trouve même des tubes, comme en témoigne

le titre « New Place In Town ». Tout en vrombissement de moteur Hot Rod et clavier à la Ray Manzarek, l’énigmatique titre « Henry Rode », lui, est inspiré de la véritable histoire d’un vieux dandy parisien, dont le corps à été retrouvé dans son appartement, plusieurs jours après sa mort. Son cadavre a été retrouvé, nu, assis dans un fauteuil. Oh ! Et écoutez donc ce titre, « It Grows » : ces apprentis Dr Frankenstein de Vox Low n’ont-ils pas simplement tenté de découper la tête d’Iggy Pop – période Lust For Life – pour l’assembler sur le corps encore tiède de Peter Murphy.
Ainsi, à travers les eaux troubles du rock’n’roll et la culture rave, Vox Low érige avec Keep On Falling un monument intemporel, vibrant d’une intensité profonde et d’une vision artistique sans compromis. Comme un hommage à leurs héros légendaires, ces virtuoses modernes transcendent les frontières du temps et de l’espace, reliant les énergies obscures du passé à la vitalité brûlante du présent. Solitude, chair triste, ferveur pour les voyous vêtus d’une paire de blue-jeans et goût de sang métallique dans la bouche, ce sont tous ces thèmes – chers à la bible post-punk – dont il est question ici : un magnifique recueil de chansons à propos de foi et de dévotion.

Let the pagans and other grave desecrators tremble: Vox Low emerges once again as a messenger from the depths, ready to shake the foundations and carrying on its shoulders the weight of ancient legends of obscure mysteries. VRRRRRRR! In their highly anticipated second album, "Keep On Falling," the Parisians dare to don the ultimate sacred shroud of rock 'n' roll mythology: Vince Taylor's black leather ski suit. Like Moses raising his arms, like the call of fallen angels, they summon on this album the spirits of Jeffrey Lee Pierce from the Gun Club, the outlawed and feverish greasers of the fifties, as well as the acid rock heroes. following their flawless debut record in 2018. But what were they up to during these five years?
The band hasn't stopped being angry, composing, but above all, they have excelled at what they do best: live performances that taste like napalm. Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa! SPLAF! Together, the Parisian quartet has toured France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and even Mexico. The band is also constantly amazed at playing in front of an increasingly younger audience: blue-haired youth taking over from the fortysomething cold wave enthusiasts dressed in trucker sweaters and worn-out Dr. Martens.
"Keep On Falling" was recorded in their secret batcave, located near the entrance of the Porte d'Aubervilliers on the dark border of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, evoking the apocalyptic universe of the film "Rue Barbare" (1984).
One can notice a slight change in direction compared to their first album, perhaps with fewer club influences. In a macabre dance between shadow and light, each track on the album reveals an unexpected depth, inviting the listener to plunge into an enchanting trance.
This work is more mature and fluid than their first opus, and Vox Low merges genres to create an enchanting blend of soaring krautrock, funereal post-punk, hazy dub, and minimalist rock 'n' roll. While the tone may seem to harden, these scoundrels also appear in a more pop and strangely brighter light. From the majestic intro of "Distance" to the very Cure-esque "Keep On Falling," Vox Low has decided to showcase the full range of their talents. And what shines in their eyes are their black eyes. Because behind the swirls of smoke and the image of gothic crows, there are luminous and beautifully composed songs hiding. There are even hits, as evidenced by the track "New Place In Town." With its hot rod engine revs and Ray Manzarek-inspired keyboards, the enigmatic title "Henry Rode" is inspired by the true story of an old Parisian dandy whose body was found in his apartment several days after his death. His naked corpse was discovered seated in a chair. Oh! And do listen to this track, "It Grows": haven't these Vox Low's apprentice Dr. Frankensteins simply attempted to cut off Iggy Pop's head - during the Lust For Life era - and assemble it on the still-warm body of Peter Murphy.
Thus, through the murky waters of rock 'n' roll and rave culture, Vox Low erects with "Keep On Falling" a timeless monument, pulsating with profound intensity and uncompromising artistic vision. Like a tribute to their legendary heroes, these modern virtuosos transcend the boundaries of time and space, connecting the dark energies of the past with the burning vitality of the present. Solitude, melancholy flesh, fervor for outlaws clad in a pair of blue jeans, and the taste of metallic blood in the mouth—these are all the themes cherished by the post-punk bible—here, they are all beautifully captured in a collection of songs about faith and devotion.
